New York, NY – March 20, 2025 – An Omanye Royal Kingdom delegation actively participated in the side event “Evidence from the Violence against Women Field: Achievements and Lessons from Three Decades Post-Beijing” at the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69). This significant event, convened by the World Bank Group, WHO, UNICEF, and the Sexual Violence Research Initiative, provided a crucial platform to reflect on advancements, share crucial lessons in prevention, address persistent challenges, and chart a course for the future in the global effort to end violence against women (VAW).
The delegation’s presence at this event underscores the Omanye Royal Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to fostering women’s leadership, ensuring the safety and security of African women, including those in the diaspora, and advocating for sustainable development solutions that safeguard African communities, with a particular focus on women and girls, from violence and its associated risks.
Omanye Royal Kingdom representatives joined a distinguished group of participants, including researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, to engage in discussions that examined the milestones in research, data, policy, and public awareness that have shaped our understanding of VAW over the past three decades. Discussions during the event focused on analyzing evidence-based effective prevention strategies, addressing structural challenges, and envisioning a future where decision-makers utilize evidence to craft impactful interventions. The striking number of 133 was shared as the daily number of victims of VAW in Sweden, indicating the urgency with which this issue must be addressed.
There were valuable insights shared following this dialogue, emphasizing the importance of contextually relevant solutions and highlighting key lessons learned in the prevention of VAW. A core message conveyed by the delegation was the critical need to move beyond one-dimensional or “cookie-cutter” approaches. As one representative articulated, “Technology holds immense potential in combating gender-based violence. However, it is imperative to acknowledge that solutions must be carefully tailored to the specific needs and realities of the communities they are intended to serve. Without a deep understanding of the local context, solutions, including technological ones, risk being ineffective or even detrimental.”
The delegation also underscored several key considerations:
During the event, the Omanye Royal Kingdom delegation actively engaged in networking opportunities to cultivate long-term partnerships focused on enhancing women’s safety and security. The delegation also sought to explore collaborations with development agencies and financial institutions to expand funding for initiatives aimed at preventing and addressing VAW.
The event facilitated a crucial dialogue on achievements and lessons learned in the field of VAW. Moving forwards, the Omanye Royal Kingdom is looking for concrete ways in which this evidence can be translated into actions, advocating for contextually relevant interventions, and prioritizing settings with the highest burden of violence. The Kingdom believes that by promoting nuanced, community-driven solutions, significant strides can be made towards achieving a world free from violence against women and girls.
Tswa Omanye abla wò!
